Our History and Concept

The Lansing Jaycees were founded in November 1929.  The father of the Michigan Jaycees, Bill Otto, helped organize the Lansing chapter and guided it throughout the earliest years of its history.  Our chapter began existence with 74 members at one time, and over the past 70 years has had as many as 167, with our present membership at 79 (01/04).

In our first year we sponsored an air show at what became Capital City Airport.  Over 10,000 people attended and the chapter raised $800.00.  We used the money to dig a well for the water-cooled aircraft engines of the time and to improve the drainage of the swamp cow pasture that is the site of our airport.  That same year we also sponsored the formation of the Lansing Civic Player Guild, Lansing’s oldest theater company.  In subsequent years, we helped establish the first Bank Tower, sponsored a scout troop, planted 5,000 petunia buds, helped establish the City Planning Commission, helped clean up the Grand River and establish the Riverfront Park System, started a drug abuse halfway house, renovate the Dodge mansion, built barns to house animals used in therapy programs at Woldumar and Beekman Center and helped establish funding for handicapped children's education programs in the Lansing Schools.  But these are just a fraction of what the Jaycees have done for Lansing.

Our members are always thinking up new ideas for service projects.  Some of the major projects offered to the current membership include: Haunted House, Adopt-a-Highway, Children’s Shopping Spree, Capitol Easter Egg Hunt, and many others.

Three Reasons to Join

The desire for self-improvement. To learn how to accept responsibility, make decisions, become effective speakers, develop management techniques, be better employers, employees and better persons.

The desire for involvement. To have a hand in identifying community needs and then planning and executing community service projects to remedy those situations.

The desire for fellowship. To meet and associate with progressive young people of the same age bracket with similar interests and objectives. Lansing Jaycees frequently interact with Jaycees from other chapters, Michigan Jaycees, and National Jaycees.

What is the history of the Jaycees?

"Jaycees" is a popular nickname for the Junior Chamber of Commerce (JC's).

The Junior Chamber movement was started by Henry Giessenbier in St. Louis in 1921 as a commitment to leadership development for young adults, and is now known worldwide as a training ground for community leaders.

The Jaycee Creed
by C. William Brownfield

We believe:

That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life;
That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations;
That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise;
That government should be of laws rather than of men;
That earth's great treasure lies in human personality; and
That service to humanity is the best work of life.
